Carbon reporting is a cornerstone of sustainability, it involves quantifying and disclosing a business's carbon emissions, creating transparency, accountability, and environmental responsibility.
With the UK's movement towards Net Zero becoming ever more apparent, carbon reporting is starting to play a key part in many businesses plans and how they operate. This practice is instrumental in not only aligning with environmental goals but also influencing how businesses secure and maintain contracts.
Whether showcasing carbon credentials to retain crucial existing contracts or implementing procedures to secure new business, how we report on carbon emissions will be pivotal for many organisations and their brand. For any organisation classed as a large undertaking business in the UK, with a turnover of £44m, balance sheet of more than £38 million, or with 250 staff or more, you will need to show compliance to ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme), where your business must carry out regular assessments of both its energy and fuel usage every four years.
For any business that exceeds two of the following three thresholds in a financial year:
- £36m annual turnover
- £18m balance sheet total
- 250 employees or more
You will also need to report under the Streamlined, Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) scheme, where your business is required to show a breakdown of its energy usage along with corresponding carbon emissions. These are filed on a yearly basis in line with your end of year reports.
NRG Solutions can help assist you with both areas, ensuring your compliance and making sure you meet all requirements. Contact us for more information on carbon reporting.
For businesses that fall outside of the above, you may still need to provide a carbon baseline along with an ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) policy for any grant funding or contract tenders, in particular when pursuing these through the local authority.
We can also assist, giving clear guidance along with helping you set your decarbonisation plan in line with your ESG policy. For contracts over £5 million in value, you may be required to write this under tender framework – PPN 06/21 where we can also make sure your policy is in line.
• Measuring a Starting Point: The first step involves establishing a carbon baseline to measure the business's current carbon footprint accurately in line with a specific financial year.
• Data Collection and Analysis: Robust data collection methods are employed to gain a full understanding of your Scope 1 (Direct), Scope 2 (Indirect) and Scope 3 (Up and Downstream) emissions, enabling businesses to identify areas for improvement both in house and via their supply chain.
• Creating a Reduction Strategy: With the baseline established, a strategic plan is implemented to reduce carbon emissions over a defined period of time, often to meet specific funding or tendering frameworks, such as PNN 06/21.
• Progress Tracking: Regular tracking and reviews, typically on an annual basis, ensure that progress aligns with the set goals, allowing for adjustments as needed.
• Comprehensive Assistance: We provide end-to-end support, from establishing your initial baseline to implementing effective reduction strategies.
• Experienced Partnerships: Working with a panel of experienced and qualified partners, NRG ensures that businesses have the expertise needed to achieve their Net Zero ambitions.
